How does Missouri’s point system work?
If you accumulate a total of 4 points in 12 months, the Department of Revenue will send you a point accumulation advisory letter.
If you accumulate a total of 8 or more points in 18 months, the Department of Revenue will suspend your driving privilege.
- 1st suspension - 30 days
- 2nd suspension - 60 days
- 3rd or more suspensions - 90 days
The Department of Revenue will revoke your driving privilege for one year if you accumulate:
- 12 or more points in 12 months
- 18 or more points in 24 months
- 24 or more points in 36 months
When your driving privilege is reinstated following a Point Suspension or Revocation, the Department of Revenue reduces your total points to 4.
Every year you drive without getting new points on your record, the points will be reduced.
- 1 year — total remaining points reduced by one-third
- 2 years — remaining points reduced by one-half
- 3 years — points reduced to zero
Although your points may be reduced to zero, certain types of convictions must remain listed permanently on your Missouri driver record.
Why is my driving privilege suspended, revoked, or denied?
There are a number of reasons why your driver license may be suspended, revoked, or denied. You can find out why you are suspended, revoked, or denied from the letter(s) you received or by contacting our office.
Can I check my driver record?
Call (573) 526-2407 to find out about non-personal information such as traffic tickets and suspension/revocation-related information. You may also get a copy of your driver record (see Driver Records).
When can my driving privilege be reinstated?
Since there are several ways a person’s driver license can be suspended, revoked, or denied, there are different reinstatement requirements. Click here for an outlined list of ways a person can be suspended, revoked, or denied and how you can get your driver license reinstated.
Am I eligible for a Limited Driving Privilege (LDP)?
If you cannot get your driver license back, but you need to drive for employment or other important matters, you may apply for a Limited Driving Privilege (LDP). You may get an LDP unless you have certain convictions or losses of license on your driver record. Some convictions or loss of license are so serious that an LDP may not be granted. Check out our Limited Driving Privilege page for reasons why you may not be eligible for an LDP.
NOTE: A person cannot obtain an LDP to drive a commercial motor vehicle.
Where and how do I apply for a Limited Driving Privilege (LDP)?
You need to fill out an Application for Limited Driving Privilege (LDP). For more information about an LDP, check out our Limited Driving Privilege page. If you have any questions about the application, please call (573) 751-4475, or email dlbmail@dor.mo.gov.
Where do I appeal the suspension, revocation, or denial of my driver license?
You may appeal a driver license suspension, revocation, or denial in the circuit court of the county where you live within 30 days after the notice of suspension, revocation, or denial is issued.
Do I have to test after I am reinstated?
You are required to retest upon reinstatement for a point revocation or upon reinstatement for a point suspension or denial if your driver license expired during the suspension, revocation, or denial period and has been expired for more than six months.
How can I drive when under suspension, revocation, or denial?
You cannot drive while your driver license is suspended, revoked, or denied unless you apply for and receive a Limited Driving Privilege. For more information, check out our Limited Driving Privilege page.

Am I eligible for a Restricted Driving Privilege (RDP)?
The Department only issues Restricted Driving Privileges (RDP) for first-time alcohol point suspensions. You must serve the first 30 days of the point suspension and file proof of liability insurance with the Driver License Bureau (i.e., SR-22 form).
What is an SR-22 insurance filing?
Proof of financial responsibility, commonly filed as an SR-22. Contact your local insurance company or agent for information regarding this form. You must file and maintain proof of financial responsibility for two years from the date your license suspension, revocation, or denial began. If you do not, your driving privilege will be suspended, revoked, or denied for the remainder of the two-year period.
Do I still need my SR-22?
You need to file the SR-22 for two years from the starting date of your point suspension, revocation, or denial.
What is an Ignition Interlock Device (IID), and do I need one?
If you have been convicted more than once for driving while intoxicated (DWI), driving with a blood alcohol concentration level (BAC), or driving under the influence of drugs (DUID), you are required to have an IID installed on any vehicle you operate. It must be maintained for six months following the reinstatement date.
For information on IID requirements, click here.
How long do I need to keep an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) on my vehicle?
If you are required to have an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) installed on your vehicle, the IID must be maintained for six months from the reinstatement date. You must report to a certified IID vendor each month for maintenance to ensure the device is working properly.
In the case that you have a Limited Driving Privilege (LDP) and an IID installed, the IID must be maintained for the duration of the LDP.
How many points go on my record when I get a ticket?
You may refer to the Missouri Driver Record Traffic Violation Descriptions and Points Assessed (Form 899) to find the point value of most tickets.
What will happen if I get a ticket in another state or on federal property (such as a U.S. military base)?
If our staff receives notification of a Missouri driver receiving a conviction for a point-assessable traffic violation in another state or on federal property (such as a U.S. military base), our staff will post the ticket to that person's Missouri driver record. The point value is determined by the violation conviction code.
And if a driver from another state receives a conviction for a point-assessable traffic violation in Missouri, a new driver record will be created to record the violation if no Missouri driver record exists for that person. The Missouri conviction information will then be forwarded to the driver licensing agency in that person's home state for any necessary processing.
How many points do I have on my record?
Please call (573) 526-2407 to find out how many points you have on your record or send an email to dlbmail@dor.mo.gov.
When can tickets be removed from my record?
Tickets cannot be removed from your Missouri driver record until the conviction is at least three years old, but other conditions may apply.
If the ticket(s) led to the suspension or revocation of your Missouri driving privilege, then five years must pass from the suspension or revocation reinstatement date before the ticket(s) may be purged.
Tickets for Failure to Maintain Insurance cannot be removed from your Missouri driver record.
To determine when and if a particular ticket may be removed from your record, please refer to the Code of State Regulations, 12 CSR 10-24.050.
How can I request an old ticket be removed from my record?
You may submit a request (including your full name and Missouri driver license number or social security number) to have old tickets purged from your record using one of the following methods:
- Send an email request to dlbmail@dor.mo.gov.
- Call (573) 526-2407 during normal business hours to request the purge.
- Send a written request to our central office:
Missouri Department of Revenue
301 West High Street - Room 470
PO Box 200
Jefferson City, MO, 65105-0200
NOTE: A ticket is not eligible to be removed if it "supports" an existing administrative suspension/revocation/denial action against the driver, or if it otherwise must remain on the record in accordance with state law.
