The Missouri Department of Revenue has been advised that some Web-based companies are selling sales tax identification numbers and tax exemption certificates for Missouri and other states for fees of at least $37. The public needs to know that valid Missouri identification numbers and tax exemption certificates can only be obtained from the Department and that there is no fee to obtain these numbers or certificates.

Missouri businesses must obtain identification numbers to use in their compliance with Missouri tax responsibilities. These numbers and the certificates are used to prove eligibility to make sales tax-exempted purchases allowed under state law. The numbers and certificates are also obtained by not-for-profit organizations to prove eligibility to make sales tax-exempted purchases. Business applications for a sales tax number can be made online at /register-business/. Although there is no fee to get a Missouri sales tax ID number, Missouri statute does contain a bonding requirement for businesses making retail sales. Not-for-profit organizations can apply for a Missouri tax ID number by submitting Form 1746 (the Missouri Sales/Use Tax Exemption Application).
